84th Annual Oscar Winners
If you haven’t heard by now, Oscar celebrated his 84th year last night with a pretty fantastic show. It was great to see Billy back doing his thing, Meryl Streep sharing with us how self-aware she is with her “I can hear half of America groaning,” line and the The Descendants co-writer Jim Rash having a little fun by posing for us with his best Angelina Jolie…
I will say it was quite nice of the Academy to bestow Best Cinematography as the night’s first award which was handed to Robert Richardson for his work on Hugo, giving him his third Oscar to date. In all, Hugo had a big night and won 5 Oscars. John Midgley and Tom Fleischman, who also won the CAS Award for Sound Mixing in a Motion Picture, took home the Oscar for their mixing work on Hugo, while the Sound Editing team of Phillip Stockton and Eugene Gearty were also awarded the category’s top prize for Martin Scorses’s film. Not to be out down by the other crew, the visual effects team led by Rob Legato, Joss Williams, Ben Grossman and Alex Henning managed to also secure a win for their Hugo work.
The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo won in the Best Film Editing category with Kirk Baxter and Angus Wall accepting, while Michel Hazazavicius won Best Directing for his work on The Artist.
